This stein is numbered # 2066. It is a 2 1/2 liter. It measures 19 1/2 inches from bottom to the tip of lid. Pokals are large ceremonial drinking vessels that do not have handles. Often they stand on a pedestal and have a removable lid. One can assume that they were filled with large amounts of beer (to the brim) and used to celebrate special occasions. Pieces like this may have been usde for the starkbierzeit, or strong beer festivalâ? , held every march in munich sa a break from lenten self-denial. In this case, the pokal would have been filled with doppelbock, a special brew with as much as 10 pre cent alcohol by volume, brewed especially for the starkbierzeit. Produced in 1897, this beautiful pokal is etched emaning the designis incised into the body of the piece. Teh design is of a maiden and a cavalier. It is signed h. Schlitt. This pokal is in mint condition with the exception of, it does has a minor repair on teh lid, that is barely visible to the naked eye. The picture ahs been magnified to show repair.
